The Track City Track Club is a nonprofit youth organization
based in
Eugene,
Oregon
which provides track & field and cross country coaching
to local area boys and girls ages 7 - 18. The
Track City Track Club is sanctioned
by USA
Track & Field which is the national governing body for track
and field, long-distance running and race walking in the
United States. Exceptional athletic ability is not a prerequisite
for membership into the club and there are no entry or tryout
requirements to join. A number of opportunities for
competition is provided throughout each season, but the
emphasis is on each athlete setting and reaching personal
goals. As part of the club membership Track City Track
Club purchases each of it's athletes a membership into USA
Track & Field, which is a requirement to compete in
the State, Regional, National Junior Olympic meets or the
State and National Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championship
meets.
The club's goals are to help encourage and assist the young
people of the Eugene & Springfield community in developing
physically, emotionally and socially through their involvement
in track & field and/or cross-country. Club athletes
will improve their level of physical conditioning as they
learn a variety of skills related to track and field. They
will build a positive self-image as they recognize their
individual achievements. They will be part of a team
that encourages and promotes the development of friendships,
support and encouragement of fellow athletes, good sportsmanship
and having a good time.
There are two separate seasons in which club athletes can
compete. The club's 2008 track & field (T&F) season
begins, with the start of practice, on Monday
March 31st and
practice concludes on July 9th just prior to the Region
XIII Junior
Olympic Outdoor Track and Field Championships,
hosted this year by the Inland Northewest
Association of USA Track & Field, except for athletes
who qualify for the USATF
National Junior Olympic Outdoor Track and Field Championships
at Burke Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska on July 22nd
- 27th. The club's 2008 cross country (XC) season
begins with the start of cross country practice on Tuesday,
September 2nd and continues through November 13th except
for qualifiers to the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross
Country Championships at Pole Green Park in Hanover County,
Virginia on December 13th.

Due to the contractual timelines set forth on the contractor
who is in charge of the demolition of the temporary seating
and structures used for the Olympic Trails, it seems that
there is no way of determine if that work could be accomplished
in time for our meet to be held. After discussion on this
matter between the University of Oregon and the Track City
Track Club Board of Directors there was no consensus on the
matter. Seeing the potential liability of attempting to hold
the meet with that type of activity on-going at the venue,
the 'Classic' Organizing Committee has decided to NOT
pursue holding this year's meet. Instead we will wait until
2009 in hope of returning to Hayward Field for the '30th Edition'
of the Track City International Classic.
Over the years the Track City International Classic has been
one of the premier youth age group track & field meets
in the country and is host to over 1,100 athletes per year.
Participants have come from all over the United States and
Canada to compete in this meet. In the past we have had participants
from as far away as the Netherlands and Guam with a young
athlete coming and competing all the way from Russia in 2002
and France in 2004. Once we will begin posting new '2009'
meet information in the early months of 2009.
For year's this meet has functioned as a major fundraiser
for the operating budget of the Track City Track Club. As
always, in 2009 we will be looking for energetic volunteers
to again help work at this meet. Without a large volunteer
turnout it would be virtually impossible to put this meet
on year after year. If you are interested in volunteering
as a meet worker at this meet, or know someone who is,
please
feel free to contact the club for information on how to sign
up.
The
board of directors of the Track City Track Club and the 'Classic'
organizing committee would like to say 'Thank You'
to all the Athletes, Coaches
and Parents who attended the ''Classic'
meet for the last 29 years. It was a joy for us to be
able to put this great meet on for you and in turn we hope
you all enjoyed yourselves during the times you were here.
We would also like to thank all
the Officials and Volunteers who with failure have volunteered
their valuable time year after year. We
are truly indebted to all of you because without you
we would not be able to keep this meet in existence. We
hope that all of you will plan on attending
the 2009 meet.
Spread the word in the coming year to all of your fellow competitors
about us and let's see if we all can make
the 30th Edition of the Track City International
Classic in 2009 the biggest and best yet.
When
making your plans for attending the '2009 Track City International
Classic' please check out the Convention & Visitors Association
of Lane County Oregon (CVALCO) at www.visitlanecounty.org
for information on available lodging, upcoming events, seasonal
vacation packages and more.
Again we say "Thank you for your patience and we
hope to see you all in 2009."
