MESSAGE
FROM THE PRESIDENT:
Runners
take your marks, Set, Go!! Well, here we are again. It's
already March and believe or not the spring track & field
season is almost upon us. It's time for everyone to dust
off those running shoes that have been put away since the end
of last season and get ready of another fun and exciting year
of youth track & field.
As
an early season tune-up the club will be holding the first of
two 'FREE' mini meets. The first meet will be held at Willamette
High School on Saturday, March 18th starting at 9:30 a.m.
We
also will be hosting a registration meeting on Monday, March 20th
at the E.W.E.B. community room in the complex's north building.
This meeting is for all prospective athletes and parents who would
like to get a jump start on registering with the club this year.
The club's board of directors will be on hand so if you have questions
about registration or the club in general please plan on attending.
I
hope to see you all there!!
~

REGISTRATION MEETING ON MARCH 20th:
Track
City Track Club will be holding a club registration meeting on
Monday, March 20th in the Community Room at the E.W.E.B. north
building from 7:00 - 8:00 pm. This meeting is for all prospective
athletes and parents who would like to get a jump start on registering
with the club this year. The club's board of directors will be
on hand so this also gives parents a chance to be the folks who
work so diligently behind the scenes to keep the club in operation.
This would be a great time to ask any questions that you may have
about Track City Track Club.
2006 REGISTRATION FEES:
Registration
fees for the 2006 Track & Field have been established by the
Board of Directors. The major changes are that there will be no
combined Track &Field and Cross Country fee. Cross Country
fees will stand alone when the XC Season begins this September.
We will have a two tiered fee schedule again this year. The fees
are as follows:
$145.00:
Athletes of all ages that wish to start the season on April 4th.
$105.00: Athletes of all ages that start our program on or after
May 22nd.
The fee schedule is intended to spread the cost of operations
based on when athlete come into the program. Please feel fee to
add a donation to the registration.
LOOKING FOR A FEW PARENT VOLUNTEERS:
The
club is in need of a parent(s) to assist with the following. This
would be a great way for new or even returning parents to get
involved with the club in a small way and get to know the other
parents and athletes. Uniform distribution: Track City is looking
for a parent that would like to volunteer to help distribute uniforms
to athletes as they are purchased. Track City provides uniforms
at cost as a separately purchased item. We need some one that
expects to be at practice on a daily basis to hand our uniforms
as they are purchased. If you are interested please contact George
Classen for specifics. Spike distribution: Track City has a number
of spikes that could be utilized by our athletes but we need some
one to head up the distribution and record keeping of the spikes.
If there is a parent that would be of interested in helping please
contact George Classen. There is not a charge for the use of the
spikes. We only ask that they be returned at the end of the season.
2006 CALENDAR OF EVENTS:
Track City has developed a calendar of the track & field season
so that all parents and athletes will all better understand the
timing for various upcoming activities and meets that will occur
during the 2006 season. The calendar will show such information
as practice days with the days that Sheldon track will not be
available to us for practice on the track. We are sorry that we
will lose these days but it is beyond our control as school activities
take priority over club events. We are currently looking at alternative
activities for those days.
Track meets are also noted but there may not be enough information
provided so we will continue to ask and provide information at
the Thursday practice sessions.
The calendar sets forth the various events that will impact our
season. Included with each monthly calendar is a more detailed
event page for that month. We hope to have a schedule of T&F
event to include. This will help guide the coaches and athlete
as to which events that will be taught on different practice days.
DEVELOPMENTAL TRACK MEETS:
Developmental
track meets will be held again on Saturdays in 2006 with the exception
of the April 29th meet which has been moved to Sunday the 30th
as there is a scheduling issue with Willamette University on the
29th.
The
developmental meets are to give the athlete an opportunity to
gain experience and confidence while trying a variety of track
& field events. Track meets are hosted by a different youth
track club each week. Developmental meet registration is $3.00
per athlete. Registration begins at each meet location at 8:00
am and events starting at 9:30 am. Events are contested in the
order listed below and are run from the youngest to oldest age
groups, girls then boys. Ribbons are awarded to the top 8 finishers
in each event.

experience that these meets can last for most of the day so it
is important to bring picnic lunches, lots of water, clothing
as necessary depending on the weather and plan to spend the day
enjoying youth track and field.
SPORTMANSHIP GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS, COACHES AND OTHERS:
From
the USATF - Oregon website
Coaches
and parents are a tremendous asset to our youth athletes in track
and field and the association is extremely grateful for your cooperation,
support, and loyalty. We expect athletes to hold themselves to
high standards of sportsmanship as outlined in the USATF 2006
Competition Rule Book and hope parents, coaches and others will
themselves serve as role models for our youth athletes by exhibiting
high standards of sportsmanship as well. We must never lose sight
of the fact that the participants in youth athletics are only
"youngsters."
Officials
and game management personnel are there to help make this a positive
experience for everyone, especially the athletes. Please treat
them accordingly. The following guidelines should be adhered to
at all times:
1.
Knowing and understanding the rules of track and field
2. Showing respect for the officials and their decisions
3. Showing respect for opponents at all times
4. Recognizing and appreciating the varying skill levels of all
athletes participating.
5. Maintaining self-control at all times.
6. Showing a positive manner when cheering.
Sanctions
may be considered toward parents, coaches, and/or teams that do
not adhere to these policies

TRAVEL TO AND FROM MEETS:
It
is the hope of the club to have as many Track City athletes as
possible attend as many meets as possible this year. The developmental
meets are important for the development and training of our athletes.
It is also important to show support for the other youth track
clubs in our association who take the time to put on the meets.
Last year as a way to help facilitate car pooling and ride sharing
we established the area near the coffee kiosk by Sears at the
Gateway Mall Parking lot as a pick up and drop off point. This
area will be used again for the 2006 season. The club is looking
for a parent(s) to help coordinate the parents willing to share
a ride and the athletes needing rides.
Parents who wish to share rides should have a cell phone and be
willing to stay at the track for their athletes to complete their
events or provide rides to athletes that compete in similar events.
Athletes should be willing to help pay for gas and have their
own food/snacks, extra clothing for the trip.
ARRIVING AND LEAVING THE PRACTICE SITE:
For
your child's safety, club athletes will be asked to stay inside
the fence area around the Sheldon track until their parent arrives
to pick them up. Someone will stay with the athlete until the
parent arrives so please, be prompt in picking up your athlete.
We have occasional parent meetings on Thursday and pass along
important information. It is important that you check in with
us on these days so we can keep you informed.
EATING SMART DURING MEETS:
What
are some foods/snacks athletes take and consume at track meets
or before practice? Remember, it is important that athletes do
not eat heavy foods before their events.
Some
suggested pre-competition foods are:
" Fruit or vegetable juice such as orange, tomato, or V-8.
" Fresh fruit such as apples, watermelon, peaches, grapes,
or oranges.
" Sports drinks, such as Gatorade or Powerade.
" Bread or bagels
" Low-fat yogurt
Remember,
staying hydrated is vital to keeping your body temperature and
electrolyte level balanced. When dehydrated, you can become fatigued,
experience headaches, nausea, dizziness, heat illness and heat
stroke. If you should need to eat or drink something about 20-30
minutes before your event make it something easily digestible.
The closer you are to the time of your event the less you should
eat.
Meal
planning is essential if you are competing in an all-day event,
such as track meet. Consider the time of your event, the amount
of your meal and the energy required. Also, be aware of the amount
of fluid you consume. You should plan ahead and prepare small
meals and snacks that you have tried before and know will sit
well with you. Do not experiment with something new on the event
day.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE CLASSIC:
The
2006 Track City International Classic dates have been set for
July, 21-23, 2006 and we are currently seeking parents and volunteers
to work the meet. As always we are in need of as many volunteers
to step forward to assist in the running of the meet. As this
meet functions as a major fundraiser of the club we encourage
all parents to signup.
All
of the volunteers have the opportunity to choose the events and
times they wish to work but remember we are signing up volunteers
on a first come, first-served basis so sign up early to make sure
you get to work the events that you prefer.
Without
the large volunteer turnout it we have had in the past it would
be virtually impossible to put this meet on year after year. Everyone
on the 'Classic' committee would like to say 'Thank You' in advance
for your continue support. If you are interested in volunteering
at this years' meet, or know someone who is, feel free to contact
Nila Brunner at 345-9919 to signup.
OFFICIALS TRAINING:
Parents
are you interested in becoming certified USATF officials? If so,
we can help. Officials are always needed at the meets where your
athletes participate. Qualified officials are needed not just
with our organization but at the Middle, High School and College
level. Parents are what make Track & Field work for our athletes
especially with youth track and field.
The
track officials training is occasionally offered on a Saturday
on the second floor of the Bowerman Building at Hayward Field.
The Level I clinic training is held in two parts:
"
Clinic portion usually begins at 9 a.m. and runs approximately
3 to 3 1/2 hours.
" Certification portion (or recertification if your certification
has expired) usually starts around 12:30 - 12:45 and is completed
around 2 p.m.
The
clinic portion, which includes both a training manual and 2006
USATF rulebook, and certification are $30 each. If you are interested
please contact George Classen. If there is enough interest the
club can contact Rod Wood, who instructs the class, to set up
a date for the club parents to get certified.
